Using Fruits For Making Party Appetizers And Side Dishes

Most of us think of raw sliced and diced vegetables along with dip for serving as simple party quick appetizers but did you realize that fresh fruit can be used in the very same way as well as in many other creative dishes? From apples to strawberries, there are so many fruity concoctions to make as side dishes and appetizers.
Although apples are perfect for dipping into sauces made with delicious ingredients like chocolate or caramel they are also ideal for using in side dishes. Combine apples with cheddar cheese and a variety of nuts for an interesting starter. You can also use apples along with all types of melons, mangos, oranges, peaches, pears, and strawberries to create a cool and refreshing fruit salad to serve either before or after dinner.

Avocados are a rather versatile fruit that you can use to create a number of crowd pleasing appetizers. Use avocados to make salsa as mild or as hot as you like and the fruit is also perfect for salads and of course, guacamole dip. Cut avocados in half and use them as "cups" for holding a number of delicious fillings that can be served before, during, or after the main course.

Dates and figs are both great for finger foods especially for parties. Stuff dates with cheese and grill ripe figs and serve them along with goat cheese and a drizzling of honey. Alternatively, for an even sweeter side dish for dessert, cover grapes with dark or milk chocolate for a sweet truffle that is a great alternative to the usual chocolate covered strawberries.

The cranberry is another delightful fruit to use in recipes for appetizers and side dishes and this small but tasty treat is full of antioxidants. In addition to cranberry sauce that is often served for holidays along side of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and gravy, use cranberries for making fruit salads and sweet, chunky salsas.

Why Vegetables Are Perfect For Appetizers

Even people who do not often eat vegetables tend to gobble them up when they are used in appetizers alongside a variety of cheeses, dips, and sauces. In addition, if you have kids who are not exactly fond of eating their vegetables, creating different appetizers to serve before meals is an excellent way to give them the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients growing children need with vegetarian quick appetizers.

http://www.recipe.com/images/saffron-pilaf-with-grilled-vegetables-R018404-l.jpg

Vegetables are also loaded with fiber and are ideal for creating a filling spread for dinner guests to choose from. Moreover, if you want to create a visually appealing display there are an incredible number of ways to prepare and garnish vegetables for a stunning food presentation.

Cucumber balls and cucumber cut-outs are perhaps one of the easiest garnishes to make from vegetables. To make cucumber balls, slice the vegetable in half and use a small melon baller to remove balls of flesh from the cucumber.

You can cut and slice cucumbers in many ways either with or without the skin and you can also use small cookie cutters to make interesting garnishes for all of your salads and side dishes. Cool cucumbers are also great for making dips to eat with bread, crackers, and vegetables.

If you need a simple way to spruce up your salads or appetizers, you can quickly julienne a handful of carrots. To begin, clean and peel the carrots then slice four sides of each carrot to create a rectangular shape. Then cut the rectangular pieces lengthwise into slices approximately one eighth of an inch thick. Next, stack the slices of carrots and slice again lengthwise also in one eighth inch strips.

Also, choose from all types of peppers including the green, red, and yellow bell varieties as well as hot peppers to chop, cut, and slice into different shapes and sizes to use in appetizer recipes.

Having A Good Experience With Chinese Delivery

Having food delivered to your home or office can be very convenient. One of the options for delivery is Chinese food. Chinese delivery can be found in most mid size cities. Before placing a first order there are some recommendations that should be considered.

 http://aht.seriouseats.com/images/20110711-Spitzers-corner-burger-sliders-review-4.jpg

Naturally the initial step is to choose the restaurant from which to order. Of course it is better to have more choices but some areas will only have one place. Good places to get ideas from are neighbors, friends and coworkers. It is not hard to get people to share their opinion of a food delivery place.

Information can also be found online. There are several review sites on the internet. These types of sites are popular places to get input on a place. The more reviews there are the more helpful the information. Some larger cities have sites created by professional reviewers. These people make a living out of reviewing local eating establishments. They have to have a good reputation of stay credible.

Once a place is chosen the ordering process can begin. A first time costumer may not have a menu to which to refer. Some places that have full online menus. Some of these may even offer the ability to order online. These online menus can really be a help to a first time customer. If there is no menu to use, the customer has to call the restaurant and ask questions about what is offered.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3249/2598816017_27335805e6.jpg

It is beneficial to have an idea of what a person wants to eat before contacting the restaurant. Chinese food menus usually divide menus by the main ingredient in the dish. There are often categories for chicken, beef, pork, seafood and vegetable dishes. The entree descriptions will list the type of vegetables included in the dish. There are also different sauces that will be described. There are also places that will inform the patron if the item is MSG free.

Often there is an indication on the menu as to how spicy a dish is seasoned. These symbols are often a special symbol or color of type on the menu. Asking about the hotness of a dish is not an uncommon occurrence when people call for Chinese food. Many dishes that are extremely hot but there are many that are fairly bland. A variety of palettes can be satisfied.

It is important to know when ordering what extra items might accompany the main course. The main course might be accompanies by soup. Most come with a serving of rice. Appetizers might be included or offered at an extra charge. Egg rolls are a popular appetizer. Normally soy sauce and fortune cookies are included but that should not be assumed.

Often deals are made for at meals of at least two people. These are complete meals that include a soup and appetizer. There is usually a choice of several entrees. Often the deals are only included in the dinner menu. The cheapest time of day to order Chinese delivery is on a lunch hour. There is often a range of time when the lunch prices and portions are offered. More of quick appetizers.

Melting Method Cakes

http://www.kingarthurflour.com/blog/files/2010/01/img_6511.JPG

Cake making by the melting method really is a piece of cake because it requires the minimum of effort. This method is specially designed to cope with the extra sweeteners needed to make soft and sticky traditional cakes such as gingerbread. Select your best quick appetizers.

Melting-method cakes have a characteristic tacky, sticky texture throughout the cake, and it is this that has made cake like gingerbread so very popular and has given them such a high place in traditional baking. This stickiness is achieved by increasing the proportion of sweetening agents to ether ingredients in the cake.

To handle the extra volume of sweetener, a special method is used. With this method the fat is melted with the sweetener before the flour is added. Before cooking the cake mixture has a good texture and a consistency similar to a thick batter, rather than the soft topping consistency of cake mixtures made by the all-in-one or creaming methods.

Like all cakes, the amount and the choice of ingredients depend on the method you are using, the flavor and the texture you wish to achieve and/or the recipe you have chosen. Average proportions for cakes made by the melting method are one-third fat to the total amount of flour; one-third sugar to the total amount of flour; and one to two-thirds of sweetener to the total amount of flour. However, these proportions can vary considerably with individual recipes.

One extremely important factor when making cakes by this method is the exact weighing of the ingredients for the individual recipes. As long as there is a correct balance of ingredients to start with, perfect results will follow.

There are no hard and fast rules about the type of flour to use. As a basic guide, plain flour is best used, because then you can control the amount of raising agent which is important to the mixture. Self-raising flour may be used for certain recipes, but as you have no control over the raising agent you can never be sure whether it is too much or too little for the purpose of making cakes by this method. Certain brown flours can be used depending on your taste. Never use a strong plain flour (the type recommended for bread making), because this will produce a tough and heavy-textured cake. You should never substitute one flour for another in a given recipe, because this could upset the overall balance.

Bicarbonate of soda is the raising agent most often used in this method of cake making as it combines successfully with plain flour. When this chemical raising agent is heated, it gives off a carbon dioxide which produces the rise. Baking powder, another chemical raising agent, is used where self-raising flour is included. The quantities are usually small because of the amounts already in a self-raising flour. Baking powder is added, nevertheless to boost the rising. If you are using a brown flour, you must use baking powder in larger quantities than with self-raising flour. Brown flour is so much heavier than white flour and needs the extra rise that a larger quantity of baking powder will give.

Temptingly Sweet Appetizer Recipe

Will you be entertaining a large group of children? Maybe you want to make a mouthwatering dessert type of quick appetizers to a special social event or gathering. if you are considering all your options and you want to make something that will tempt anyone around, you might like to learn how to make these delicious sticky chocolate butter bars. They are great to take along for any type of party where chocolate lovers may be. They also make a nice treat to serve to family while watching your favorite movies at home.

http://img4.myrecipes.com/i/recipes/cl/11/07/brie-strawberries-honey-cl-x.jpg

This is an easy to make recipe that lets you take advantage of using a chocolate cake mix. Of course, you could always use other flavors or cake mixes to make this recipe. Choose to use chocolate or one of your family favorite cake flavors. Although, you will bake these sweet appetizer bars in a preheated oven, the batter may not seem as if it is completely done. The center of the chocolate butter bars may not seem quite firm in the center. This is alright, since this is what will cause the bars to be sticky with chocolaty goodness.

Baking them a bit longer is fine if you prefer; however, doing so may produce more of a brownie effect rather than a sticky, gooey type of bar. You can add chopped walnuts or pecans or you can leave them out if you do not want to include them.

http://www.countryliving.com/cm/countryliving/images/YW/fig-crostini-de.jpg

If you feel like experimenting with a double chocolate flavor consider tossing in some chocolate chips or maybe some butterscotch or peanut butter chips. This recipe only uses just a few ingredients; you may even have most of them in the pantry right now. If you do, you can make them now and have them ready this evening. no matter your reasons for making them you will find that kids of all ages will love them and come back to ask for more.

Recipe for Sticky Chocolate Butter Bars

What You Need
  • 1 package chocolate cake mix
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 package softened cream cheese 8 ounce
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
How to Make It

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Using a large mixing bowl you will add the chocolate cake mix, egg and butter and then mix well to combine. Press this mixture into the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Set aside until needed.

In a separate mixing bowl you will cream together the softened cream cheese, eggs, powdered sugar, and vanilla flavoring. Spread this mixture onto of the cake mixture in the baking pan. Place the pan in the preheated oven for about 30 to 35 minutes or until done.

After baking remove from oven and dust with powdered sugar and then allow the dessert to completely cool to the touch. Cut into individual bite size bars for serving.

Can A Buffet Be Profitable For Your Restaurant?

Are buffets profitable for restaurants? They certainly can be but you do have to go about it in the right way. Many customers love being able to get their food quickly when they come in. They may not have very much time or they may have small children that aren't good at waiting. They also like to have a huge selection of foods instead of having to decide on a certain plate off the menu.

It is important to offer the very best foods to your customers for a buffet and quick appetizers. They will be looking for homemade mashed potatoes and fresh baked bread. If you take short cuts to save time and money on such items chances are they won't be coming back. Why should they pay money for food that isn't exceptional? You also need to make sure the food on display is fresh and that there is plenty to choose from.

http://www.spaclique.com/images/stories/Buffet.jpg

Prices are a number one complaint of customers though when it comes to a buffet style restaurant. They want to price to be parallel to the types of foods that will be offered. Keep this in mind when you are planning your menu as well as setting the prices you are going to charge. A buffet can be a good choice for families but they still need to be able to afford the asking price to enjoy it.

Consider offering a variety of prices on the buffet depending on what time of day it is. Weekdays may be cheaper than weekends if you offer something extra on the weekend such as steak or prime rib. You should charge less for children and for the elderly than you do for adults that come in to eat. This is a great way for the entire family to get a meal they can afford at your restaurant.

You definitely need to make sure you have reliable staff with a buffet too though. They need to keep their eyes open for spills and for empty containers of food on the buffet line. They also need to keep plenty of plates and silverware stacked up. They can clear away plates from the tables and even help families get everything to the table.

http://www.entrepreneur.com/businessideas/graphics/buffet_restaraunt.jpg

It does cost plenty of money to set up and operate a successful buffet restaurant, that is for sure. Yet if you go about it correctly you will be able to make much more money than you spend. Don't be afraid that your guests are going to eat more than they pay for it as that rarely happens. It is somewhat of a trick I guess you would say though as many of them think they definitely ate more than what they paid for.

Do your best to keep the cost of your food items low, but at the same time don't sacrifice the quality of what you offer. You can compare prices from different providers to see who can offer you the best prices. You can also buy in large quantities to get discounts. You may get more of a discount if you pay by check when your supplies are delivered instead of waiting for an invoice to be sent to you.

Do all you can to keep your other sources of overhead income low as well. They include wages, utilities, paying for the building, dishes, and decor. You will need to have a good estimate of how much you can afford in each of these areas. Make necessary adjustments accordingly in order to get the most benefit from it. You definitely want as much of the money that you bring in to stay available to you as possible.

I found this dip when I was on a low carb diet and was looking for a party appetizer that would work well with vegetables. Something with a robust flavor that would perk up the veggies.

Well this one definitely fit the bill. This appetizer has become a favorite among my friends. It's served multiple times throughout the year at various parties that I either host or attend.

You can make it as smokey and spicy as you want by adjusting the amount of chipotle peppers (smoked jalepenos) but watch out. You can easily go from mildly spicy to blow-your-face-off hot by adding too much!

Steps to Make Cheddar Chipotle Dip

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Stir together cheeses, mayonnaise, corn, green chili peppers, chipotle chili peppers and garlic powder in a large mixing bowl. Spread mixture into a 1 quart, covered dish.

Bake for 30 minutes until bubbly. Top with tomato, green onion and cilantro. I like to make a pattern out of the toppings so I put the tomatoes all in the middle, make a ring around them with the green onion then sprinkle the cilantro over all.

Serve with vegetables, like red, green and yellow peppers. Tostido and Frito Scoops work well too.

Number Two Most Requested Hot Appetizer--Boneless Buffalo Wings
    • 1 large bag of popcorn chicken, thawed (I buy mine at Sam's Club)
    • 1 package dry Good Seasons italian dressing mix
    • 1 bottle Frank's Red Hot Sauce (or to taste)
    • 1 stick margarine (butter will separate)
    • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
    • Pinch dried basil
In a saucepan, combine dressing mix, hot sauce, margarine, lemon juice and basil and cook until margarine melts, stirring constantly.

Place chicken in a large bowl and pour sauce over it. Stir until well combined, then pour all into a Crock Pot. Cook on low 4 hours. Crack the lid to keep down the steam and prevent wings from getting soggy.
Serve with celery sticks and blue cheese dressing (do not use the reduced fat variety).

Number Three Most Requested Hot Appetizer--Warm Green Chili Dip
    • 8 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese
    • 8 oz. shredded mild cheddar cheese
    • 2 cups mayonnaise
    • 1 small sweet onion, minced
    • 1 can (4 oz.) chopped green chilis, drained
    • 1-1/2 oz. chopped pepperoni
    • 1/2 cup sliced ripe olives
    • Tostidos or Fritos Scoops
In a shallow baking dish, combine the first five ingredients. Top mixture with the pepperoni and olives.
Bake at 325 degrees about 25 minutes or until bubbly. Serve with Scoops, crackers or assorted fresh vegetables.

Note: I do not recommend using reduced fat mayonnaise.

Speaking from personal experience, these three hot appetizers are guaranteed to be a hit at any get together.
WARNING: Get ready to hand out the recipes!

    Top 3 Delicious Desserts

Number One Most Requested Delicious Dessert--Raspberry White Chocolate Dream Bars
    • 1 box white cake mix
    • 1/3 cup evaporated milk
    • 1-1/2 sticks melted butter
    • 1 cup chopped nuts
    • 1/2 cup seedless raspberry jam
    • 12 oz. white chocolate chips
Combine cake mix, milk, butter and nuts. Makes a very gooey dough. Spray a 9 x 13 pan and spread half of the dough into the bottom of the pan. Bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

Melt the jam in the microwave (about a minute) and spread on top of hot crust. Immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over jam. Crumble remaining dough on top and bake an additional 20-25 minutes. Cool completely before cutting.

Cooking by Steam Oven Offers a Healthy Option

Steam ovens have most normally been associated with the upper end of the kitchen appliance market. However in recent times steam ovens have been considered part of a healthy lifestyle choice.
One of the great advantages of cooking by steam is that it keeps in the vitamins, nutrients and minerals of foods that are essential to a healthy diet, and also one can argue better keeps the flavour of the food. Additionally cooking by steam alleviates the need for thus of oils and fats.

Additionally with steam cooking you can cook different types of food at the same time without running the risk of the flavours of the different food to transfer to one another.

    http://www.redferret.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/intellisteam-small.jpg

Traditionally associated as a high value item, manufacturers are increasingly bringing out new models which are more within the reach of the main stream consumer. Cheaper models may not always offer all of the benefits of higher priced models but the same quality in the cooking process gives the same health benefits through the goodness of the food.

Steam cooking is increasingly fitting into the family lifestyle, not only on health grounds, but through the fact that steam cooking can be a very fast process which fits in with the time restricted family. Additionally new models being brought out on the market are becoming increasingly versatile with a range of functions and programmable settings to make family life easier. For example the C44L20 molde comes with an ipressive 20 automatic programs to cook by with a range of cooking temperatures ranging from 40 through to 100 degrees. And for those on a tight budget, steam ovens cook at lower temperatures, thus meaning that less energy is used in the cooking process, saving the consumer money.

Steam ovens come in a range of colours to compliment the consumer's current kitchen design although Stainless Steel continues to be the most popular colour to choose with consumers.

Perhaps one of the downsides of using a normal steam oven is that it does not brown the food. There are however some models that also incorporate conventional cooking which means that you can cook by steam for the part of the process and then revert to conventional cooking methods to brown the food you are cooking, giving the consumer the best of both worlds.

Integrated steam ovens are most commonly the norm but for those consumers who do not want to completely redesign their kitchen, free standing models of reasonably priced steam ovens are also available.

Simple and Elegant Panini Grilled Sandwiches Recipe

    http://www.saveoahu.org/pml/images/3400/3455_1-panini-grill-recipes-learn-how-to-treat-yourself.jpg

    http://lh4.ggpht.com/_onnOLBn6RiQ/TDjaRsNZwgI/AAAAAAAAALA/0ayS4Fsu7-U/Panini1.png

Panini, an exemplary grilled sandwich, is found in the menus of restaurants, cafes, and bistros. Panini is an Italian plural word which translates to "small breads." The singular term is "panino." By tradition, Panini sandwiches are made of small breads. In English-speaking places, Panini is an Italian grilled sandwich.
Panini sandwiches are grilled that's why its outside texture is crunchy and the inside texture is chewy. These sandwiches are loaded with an assortment of meats, melted cheese, and vegetables. Pressure is put on the sandwich while being grilled so that the ingredients will meld.

Here's the basic recipe to follow when making a Panini grilled sandwich.

    Ingredients:
Italian breads such as cibiatta and focaccia - Other kinds of breads can be used. Denser breads are preferable to get a crispy crust when toasted.

    Olive oil
Fillings - Anything that suits the taste buds and diet. Examples of good Panini sandwich fillings are the following:

    - Salami, extra virgin olive oil, roasted red peppers and balsamic vinegar
    - Dry salami, fontina cheese and arugula
    - Grilled mushrooms (portobella) and assagio cheese
    - Goat cheese, mortadella and balsamic vinegar
    - Smoked Gouda, provolone, basil leaves and pesto
    - Turkey, cheddar, bacon and roasted red peppers
    - Turkey, Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce and avocado
    - Turkey breast, roasted ham, cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomatoes
    - Roast beef, horseradish mayonnaise, mozzarella, onions, caramelized onions and tomatoes
    - Pulled chicken, provolone, mayonnaise, chopped basil, red onion and tomatoes
    - Prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, plum tomatoes, basil and olive tapenade
    - Jerk chicken, chipotle aioli, red leaf lettuce, roasted red peppers and sautéed onions.

    Procedure:

The steps in making a Panini sandwich are so simple. First, start with the bread. Lay down two pieces of bread. Then, brush lightly with olive oil (preferably extra virgin) one side of each bread. This would result to a crispier texture. Then, put on top of bread the fillings for the sandwich. Anything can be added. Good quality meats and the remaining of the feelings between two yummy layers of cheese is the usual arrangement.

Lastly, toast the sandwich. It is preferable to have a Panini grill when making the sandwiches. A Panini grill is an appliance that looks like a waffle iron. The heat is used by pressing the sandwich from below and above. The grill feature of the sandwich can be seen after toasting because of the ridge plates in the Panini grill. The Panini grill gives pressure to the sandwich, thus, allowing the ingredients to meld and create an appetizing and compact texture.

In case a Panini grill is not available, a typical electrical contact grill or a grill pan can be used. Pre-heat the grill pan. Then, place on it the sandwich. Afterwards, place a heavy material, such as an aluminum foil wrapped brick, on the top of the sandwich. After toasting one side, flip over the sandwich and repeat the toasting process. Keep on looking for more quick appetizers just like these sandwich recipe.

Sandwich Appetizer and Finger Food Ideas

Serving sandwich quick appetizers and finger foods is an easy, convenient way to present food at any gathering. Almost any sandwich can be made into a finger sandwich, but there are a few reliable standbys that most everyone enjoys. Making a large quantity of little sandwiches can be simplified with proper planning.

Finger rolls are often used at gatherings. They are larger than the average tea sandwich and can be stuffed ahead or placed whole in a basked or on a tray beside a meat and cheese platter for guests to assemble as they choose. Common fillings include ham and cheese, roast beef and cheese, turkey and cheese, or salads like egg salad, ham salad, chicken salad or tuna salad. Vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuce, onions and pickles can be placed on the sandwiches or laid out on a platter beside the sandwich tray. When young people are in attendance, some hosts also provide peanut butter and jelly sandwiches alongside the more adult choices.

Tea sandwiches are generally made with white or wheat bread and can contain the same ingredients as finger sandwiches. The edges are neatly cut off and the sandwiches are cut into fourths either diagonally to create triangles or crosswise to form squares. Using a two-inch cookie cutter on the bread can create sandwiches in fancy shapes like flowers or hearts. Another popular choice for tea sandwiches is the cucumber sandwich, which contains thinly sliced cucumbers and an herb spread of cream cheese, dill, garlic and chives.

Other bread options are mini bagels, flour tortillas or lavash. Mini bagels should be piled high with meat and cheese or salads to ensure the flavor of the fillings are not overpowered by the thick, dense bread. Tortillas and lavash are rolled to encase the fillings and then cut into pieces about one to two inches wide. For gatherings around the holidays, spread cream cheese over the tortilla or lavash and then top it with a spoonful of whole berry cranberry sauce, slices of turkey, and a generous amount of stuffing to make flavorful seasonal starters.

Setting food on the table is easier when appropriate preparations are made in advance. Mixing moist salads a day ahead and leaving them in the refrigerator overnight not only reduces the amount of work that needs to be done on the day of the event, but also allows the flavors time to marry. Spreading a thin layer of butter or cream cheese on both sides of the bread or rolls will keep absorption to a minimum, and as such will help to prevent soggy bread. Cutting vegetables ahead of time will also aid in the assembly or table layout process. With proper preparation and the right choices in sandwiches, the food at the gathering is sure to be a great success.

    Cheap Barbecue Party Food Ideas

       http://www.countryliving.com/cm/countryliving/images/k5/CLX0708FLIPgrill13-de.jpg        http://www.celebrations.com/img-upload/download/1649.JPG

It doesn't have to cost you a lot of money to make your barbecue memorable. Remember -- most people expect burgers and potato salad. So any different food is good. And if you follow our cheap barbecue party ideas you can impress your guests for not a lot of money for your quick appetizers.

First off I must state that there is absolutely nothing at all wrong with burgers and potato salad. I love them both and all weekend griller's BBQ parties should have a good selection of these and other basics. But just a few other cheap barbecue party food ideas during planning can save your food -- and your parties -- from boring repetition.

Here are five cheap and easy food ideas you can try immediately to make you next BBQ party memorable and fun:

    1) One word -- Condiments! Everyone has mustard and ketchup. Occasionally you see a lonely bottle of Frank's. But for very little money or effort you can add a rainbow of taste to your table and impress your guests. Visit a specialty store or good supermarket and pick up some bottles of unusual BBQ sauces or hot sauces for the table. Do not just paint the meat on the grill -- give your guests a choice on the table. Today's

BBQ and hot sauces come in a wide variety of flavors and heat levels and there is something for (almost) everyone. Consider the food you are serving and other sauces that may complement it. If you are serving chicken consider a white BBQ sauce or horseradish sauce. If you are serving fish consider a sweet Barbeque sauce or a Vietnamese or Japanese fish sauce.

    2) Salsa -- Not just for corn chips anymore! Several years ago salsa took over the number-one-selling condiment spot in the US from ketchup but most people still think of it as just a dip for chips or a covering for Mexican foods. Salsa is -- and can be -- so much more. Consider visiting a Farmers' Market or specialty food store the morning of the barbecue and picking up a fresh salsa. Or better still, yet spend a little time the night before the party and make a batch of homemade salsa. It's really very easy. And don't just stick to the basic tomato/pepper salsa -- be brave and try a fruit or a veggie based salsa. Choose your salsa based on the meat and vegetables you will be serving and invite your guests to cover these foods for a new taste experience.

    3) It's almost embarrassing how much good will and praise can be produced by a simple salad. As cheap BBQ party ideas go, this is one of the best. Everyone does potato and macaroni salad. Ask your friends to bring a dish and you'll probably get 3 of each. You can impress everyone to no end by making up a colorful and easy pasta or fruit salad that not only looks great but tastes great, too. Add some items off the grill into it at the last moment for an unforgettable touch.

    4) Sides -- Go beyond the salad! So you've brought your impressive (though cheap) salad. But now think beyond to other side dishes. What springs to mind? If you are like most people - corn on the cob comes to mind. There is nothing wrong this. But to really impress your guests think of adding one or two other unusual sides that will complement the main course. And remember that sides don't have to be just veggies. Think of the possibilities of fruits, shellfish and even meats.

    5) Desserts - Why not use the fire? Okay, you gotta have a dessert. You'll probably want something cold (homemade ice cream, maybe?) and some sweets for the kids. But since the fire is still warm why not consider really impressing your friends by making an additional dessert or two on the grill. Make homemade ice cream (always a reasonably cheap choice) AND grilled dessert to go with it and you will be considered a party god for many years.

Since most BBQ parties feature the same basic foods, these cheap party food ideas will help any weekend griller to impress their guests. Do it well and your friends will invite you to every party and beg for an invitation to yours.
